Call for Papers
As companies increasingly embrace emerging business analytics and machine learning technologies to enhance business value, academia is responding with innovative curricula in online, traditional and hybrid delivery formats that meet the industry needs. Aligned with the Symposium theme of Decision Analytics Connecting People, Data, and Things, we seek submissions focused on teaching business intelligence, big data analytics, cognitive analytics, social media analytics, machine learning, IoT analytics, data science, visualization, or other emerging analytic technologies. Submissions should address the acquisition, application, and development of the knowledge and skills required to use business analytics in industry or topics related to the creation and maintenance of environments that support his education. Contributions can be of varied types, including: pedagogical studies, teaching cases, tutorial exercises, or similar artifacts related to curriculum, pedagogy/teaching, learning, and infrastructure addressing topics including but not limited to:
- Business Analytics (BA) curriculum development with assessment methods
- Bodies of Knowledge (BOK) for Business Intelligence, Analytics, Machine Learning, Data Science
- Developing interdisciplinary focus that cuts across traditional functional areas
- Differentiating business analytics curricula for Undergraduate, MBA, Master of Science and Executive Education, and tailoring curricula to generalists and specialists
- Integration of IT and analytics skills
- New BA programs, courses, and centers
- Pedagogical innovations in business analytics
- Innovations in delivery of analytics courses (online, hybrid, student interaction, etc.)
- Challenges and solutions related to the construction and maintenance of classrooms and labs in support of business analytics education
- Organizational case studies (with teaching notes) that provide rich stories of individual organizations’ management and analytics initiatives and address a variety of issues in management sponsorship, strategic priorities, adoption and implementation of analytics, technical challenges, collaboration, communication, and actionable results in business analytics:
- Different stakeholders involved in decision-making process and their role in implementation success
- Role of strategic planning in adoption of analytics and implementation success
- Organizational challenges and barriers
- Metrics to measure effectiveness of these technologies to enhance business value
- Success factors and reasons for failure
- Ethical and/or global issues
- Tutorial exercises (with teaching notes) and simulations that provide a business scenario, data sets, and step-by-step introduction to the latest business analytics tools, covering topics including but not limited to:
- Integration of data management and analytics
- Integration of analytics and visualization tools
- Analytics certification and digital badges programs
- Open source vs. proprietary platforms
- The use of platform and/or software to enhance pedagogy for data mining, cognitive analytics, text mining, and sentiment analysis using social media data and big data
- Data sets that can be used by other faculty members to augment their pedagogy
- Hands-on software experiences and software tutorials
Submission Categories in Teaching Track
Papers may fall into one of the following categories:
- Teaching Case
- Pedagogical Study (Completed or Ongoing)
No firm page limit is specified for the manuscript; however, it is expected that the manuscripts succinctly present the material.
Submission and Publication Guidelines
All original submissions and camera-ready versions must conform to the submission template. Download the submission template here. Original submissions must not contain any author information. Upon acceptance, camera-ready version of the manuscript must contain author information, as mentioned in the submission template.
Papers will be submitted through Conferency submission system (submitting author needs to create an account to submit the paper):
All submitted manuscripts will go through a double-blind review process.
Authors of accepted papers will have the option of publishing: (a) the complete manuscript OR (b) an extended abstract (single-spaced 2-3 pages) as part of the symposium proceedings on AIS eLibrary. If authors choose to publish only the extended abstract, authors will retain copyright of the manuscript submitted for review and feedback.
When submitting camera-ready version of the manuscript, we suggest that authors share any pertinent data with the symposium attendees as feasible (optional, but encouraged). This guideline is meant to encourage knowledge sharing with the broader academic community and replicability of research results.
In preparing your submission, we suggest that authors review the following helpful tips. Ensure that —
- Topic is relevant to the symposium theme and will draw an audience
- Objectives are clear and well-described
- Paper is clearly written
- Paper is well organized and flows logically
- Literature review is relevant, comprehensive and up-to-date
- Analyses (conducted or proposed) are appropriate
- Evidence supports authors’ arguments
- Paper makes useful contributions (or, has potential to make contributions) to the field, and is consistent with the Symposium theme and purpose
- Reference list is complete

Best Paper Award
One paper from the teaching track will be selected for the “Best Paper” award recognition at the symposium.
